Complex filters

What you should know

The "complex filters" offer substantially greater filtering possibilities compared with the basic filters:

Combining multiple basic filters

You can combine up to five basic filters in a complex filter. WebTerm then displays only those entries that match all the filter criteria.

You define the filter fields and field entries for the individual criteria in the same way as for the basic filters. You can combine multiple basic filters that relate to the same field.

Saving and re-using different filters

You can save complex filters so that you and perhaps other WebTerm users can re-use them at any time.

Additional filter settings

For complex filters you can specify additional settings that are not available for basic filters (e.g. matching case or applying filter criteria to the target language; see here).

This function is an optional feature

Please note that this function is an optional feature and has to be enabled on the WebTerm server. For more information, please contact our sales team.

Complex filter statuses

In the case of complex filters, WebTerm distinguishes the following filter statuses:

Own filters/other owners' filters

"Own filters" are complex filters that you have created and saved. Complex filters that other users have created and saved are "Other owners' filters".

Public/private filters

For the filters that you create, you can specify whether they are public or private.

"Public filters" can be used by all WebTerm users. And that also means you can use public filters created by other users. "Private filters" are available only to the administrator and users with the same user name. No other users can use them.

Access and editing permissions for complex filters

Access and editing permissions for complex filters depend on whether you are an administrator:

If you are not an administrator, you have the following options:

You can use, view, edit and delete your own filters

You can use and view public filters created by other users

You can duplicate and edit public filters created by other users and save them as your own

If you are an administrator, you can use, view, edit, duplicate and delete all filters - even private filters owned by other users.

Additional filter settings

For complex filters you can define additional settings that are not available for basic filters. You can select or deselect the following settings for each individual field of a complex filter:

Table 8-2: Additional filter settings for complex filters

Filter setting

Meaning

Match case

The filter is case-sensitive. That means WebTerm only displays data records whose case matches the case of the filter criterion.

Include blank fields

WebTerm also displays data records in which the "filter by" field is blank and therefore does not match the criterion.

Show non-matches

Filter "inversion" : WebTerm displays the data records which do not match the filter criterion. WebTerm does not display data records that match the filter criterion.

Apply to target language

WebTerm applies the filter criterion to the target language instead of the source language.

Applying complex filters

You can apply your own complex filters or public filters owned by other users.

If you are an administrator, you can also apply private filters owned by other users.

Complex filters and basic filters are mutually exclusive

There is no useful purpose in applying complex filters and basic filters simultaneously .

Therefore, WebTerm automatically cancels any basic filter you may have used when you apply a complex filter (and vice versa).

Other owners' filters may have been altered

If you regularly use another owner's filter, you should be aware that the owner may alter the filter settings from one occasion to the next. However, you can duplicate the public filters of other owners and save them as your own (see here).

To apply a complex filter:

1 Open the Filter menu in the Settings area.

WebTerm shows the following filters in the Complex filters list:

All public filters (preceded by an asterisk *).

Your own private filters

If you are an administrator: the private filters of other users

Fig. 8-6: To apply a complex filter, select it from the list

2 Select the complex filter you wish to apply.

The next time you perform a search, WebTerm will apply the filter and only display those data records which match the criteria of the complex filter.

Please note that WebTerm does not save any filter settings when you click the Save button. This prevents you inadvertently performing searches whose results are limited by filter settings the next time you log in.

Complex filters overview

To view and edit the settings of complex filters, you work in the filters overview. To display the overview, open the Filter menu on the Settings panel and click the Edit button next to the Complex filters list.

Fig. 8-7: Filters overview

WebTerm displays the overview detailing the following information:

Public/Private - indicates whether the filter is also available to other users (see here)

Comments - additional remarks about the filter

Depending on your user permissions and the filter statuses, you have the following options:

Viewing and editing a complex filter - see here

Duplicating and editing a complex filter - see here

Public - select this option if you want the filter to be public. That will allow other users to see and apply the filter as well (see here).

Comments - it is advisable to enter brief remarks to explain the purpose of the filter. This is particularly useful in the case of public filters when it can be of assistance to other users.

4 Specify the filter criteria in the table rows that follow. You can combine up to five basic filters:

Filter field and Field entry columns - filter field and filter criterion

As with the basic filters, there are the following possibilities (see also the section "Using basic filters"):

You can select field entries from a list. For various fields, you can use the Edit button to open a window in which you can select the item you require from a list (e.g. when selecting users, dates, dictionaries).

You can enter the field entry manually (except for date fields). You can define multiple entries as alternatives by entering the pipe character ( | ) as a separator.

Following columns ( Match case etc.) - additional filter settings (see Table 8-2).

If you require fewer than five basic filters, select the item No filter on the unused rows.
