Basic filters

You can define your own filter criteria to control which entries in a dictionary WebTerm displays or hides. These are what are known as the "basic filters".

To do so, set the following two settings:

The subject area to be filtered by

The value which the field must have for WebTerm to display the data record

Examples of user-defined data record filters

These are some of the tasks for which you can use basic filters:

Displaying data records in a specific subject area only

You are working on a translation about computers . Accordingly, you only want WebTerm to display data records relating to that subject area.

To do that, you select the header field Subject as the filter field and Computers as the field entry.

Checking new data records

Terminologists working across the globe enter new data and mark them unchecked .

It is your job to check this terminology so you only want WebTerm to display data records with the status unchecked .

To do that, you select the entry field Status as the filter field and unchecked as the field entry. When you have checked the data records, and made the necessary corrections, change the status to checked .

Displaying nouns only

You only want to search for nouns for your work.

To do that, you select the entry field Part of speech as the filter field and Noun as the field entry.

You can also apply these basic filters in conjunction with standard data record filters (see the section "Standard data record filters"). WebTerm then only displays the data records which match both the standard data record filter and the basic filter.

If this function is not displayed

If WebTerm does not show this function, that means that you do not have the necessary user permissions to use it (see here). Please contact your administrator for further assistance.

Using basic filters

To use a basic filter, you specify the filter field and the filter criterion:

1 Open the Filter menu on the Settings panel:

Fig. 8-2: You open the Filter menu to specify basic filter and field entry

2 From the Basic filter list, select the field whose contents you want to filter by.

If WebTerm shows the Dictionaries menu (see here), the header field Dictionary is not available as a filter field. In that case you can use the Dictionaries menu as a means of selecting between dictionaries, so that filtering by dictionary is not necessary.

3 In the Field entry box, enter the item that must be matched for WebTerm to display the data record.

You have the following options here:

Selecting field entries from a list

For various fields, you can use the Edit button to open a window in which you can select the entry you require from a list (e.g. when selecting user, dates, dictionaries; see the section "Selecting field entries from windows").

If the Edit button is not available, you must type the entry manually.

Entering field entries manually (except for date fields):

You can define multiple entries as alternatives by entering the pipe character ( | ) as a separator.

In general, an exact match is required, i.e. the whole of the expression must match. However, for hierarchical lists you can also enter parts of words (values).

In addition, you can use the * character as a wildcard as with standard searches (except for user, dictionary and date fields).

The next time you perform a search, WebTerm will apply the filter and only display those data records which match the field entry.

Please note that WebTerm does not save any filter settings when you click the Save button. This prevents you inadvertently performing searches whose results are limited by filter settings the next time you log in.

Selecting field entries from windows

For various fields you can use the Edit button to open a window in which you can select the required field entries (3).

The contents of those windows depends on the filter field selected:

In the case of non-hierarchical lists, the field type Dictionary and the field type User , WebTerm displays all available choices:

Fig. 8-3: WebTerm treats multiple selections as alternatives

You can select one or more items. If you select more than one item, WebTerm treats them as alternatives. The filter criterion is then met if one of those items is a match.

Hierarchical lists

For hierarchical lists, WebTerm shows the available choices as a tree structure:

Fig. 8-4: If an item with subdivisions is selected, all of its subdivisions are selected as well

In order to expand or collapse an item, click the + or - sign accordingly.

You can select one or more items. If you select more than one item, WebTerm treats them as alternatives. The filter criterion is then met if one of those items is a match.

Date fields

For date fields, WebTerm shows the following window:

Fig. 8-5: You do not have to specify both dates

You do not have to specify both dates - you only have to enter one of the dates, but you can enter both if you wish.

Select From and/or To to specify the start and/or end date.

You can then enter the desired date in the boxes in the format Day Month Year .

You can also click the Edit button to open a calendar from which you can select the date.
