WebTerm 6 enables you to look up, find, manage and create world-wide company-specific specialist terminology resources across an intranet or the Internet. Data management based on a conventional Internet browser platform ensures that all specialist terms and their translations are used consistently throughout your global operations.
And into the bargain, WebTerm makes your work as straightforward as possible.
You can search for specific terms via an intranet or Internet link, or turn the pages of the virtual dictionary as you would with a print version. When you do so, WebTerm can display additional information about the terminology (e.g. definition of a term, translations in additional languages, gender of nouns, etc.) and even play multimedia that illustrate the meaning. What is more, WebTerm can filter dictionary entries so that you only see those that relate to your particular subject, for example.
Comprehensive language support
WebTerm can function with all languages whose character sets are based on Unicode (i.e. including Asian, Eastern European and Arabic languages).
Simple user interface and PDA user interface
Users who only want to search for terminology work with the WebTerm simple interface. They can then concentrate on the essentials without having to concern themselves with the multiplicity of functions offered by WebTerm. You can even access WebTerm from a PDA when you are "on the move" by using the PDA user interface.
The administrator defines individual log-in settings for users and user groups. That means that users only see what is absolutely relevant to their tasks. Inadvertent alterations or confusion of specialist terminology are also prevented.
Editing terminology (Enterprise version)
If you are an authorised user, you yourself can change, add, or delete entries. WebTerm documents those operations in a revision log so that the administrator is always aware of the latest changes.
You can communicate with the terminology administrator and other users via the comments interface in order to comment on existing entries or propose new terminology to be included.
Data sources shared with TermStar
WebTerm works directly and online with TermStar, the STAR terminology management tool. The enormously powerful functions of TermStar are thus available to the terminology administrator. Users around the world benefit immediately - WebTerm accesses the TermStar data directly, time-consuming synchronisation sequences are not required.
Interfaces with other STAR tools
WebTerm is closely linked with other STAR tools. In TermStar, for example, users can use the WebTerm Download facility to easily incorporate the centrally managed WebTerm terminology in their local TermStar dictionaries. In that way, they can also use the terminology to obtain suggested translations when working with the Transit translation memory system.
Accessing terminology from Microsoft Word and Adobe FrameMaker
WebTerm Gate enables you to access WebTerm to search for translations or enter terminology when working in Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker.
The following versions of WebTerm 6 are offered:
WebTerm 6 Professional includes all functions required to display dictionaries, perform terminology searches and communicate via the comments interface.
The dictionaries are managed by the terminology administrator. He/she makes the changes with TermStar and WebTerm then shows them to all users immediately.
WebTerm 6 includes additional editing functions so that users with the appropriate permissions can edit dictionaries directly over the Internet. This makes global terminology management possible - terminology can be documented where it arises.
For both versions, there are also additional optional functions which have to be enabled on the WebTerm server. For more information, please contact our sales team.
Symbols indicate distinctions![]() Symbols draw your attention to the fact that a function is optional. |
Your log-in details determine whether you are an administrator or user and what your permissions are:
The "administrator" configures WebTerm using the administration user interface. He/she determines the basic settings, defines data sources and controls access details, access permissions and user profiles. On the WebTerm standard user interface, the administrator also has a number of additional facilities that are not available to users without administrator permissions.
All those who do not have administrator permissions are referred to in this manual simply as "users" .
Terminology access permissions
The administrator specifies which terminology which users have access to. By controlling editing permissions, the administrator also determines whether users can edit terminology and, if so, which.
The administrator defines the individual WebTerm user interface settings for each user by way of user profiles. The administrator also determines whether or not users may alter their own profiles.
In addition, the user profiles specify which terminology details are shown to users and which WebTerm functions they can use.
The persons who manage the dictionaries are referred to in this manual as the "terminology administrators" . They make dictionaries available, and can create values lists and input verifications, and import terminology. To do so, they work with the terminology management tool TermStar.
A terminology administrator usually also deals with the comments and terminology requests submitted by the users, i.e. he/she is the person to whom the comment e-mails are sent.
Terminology administrators are frequently administrators as well so that they can configure WebTerm.
The Single Sign-On option (SSO ) is useful in situations where WebTerm is incorporated in a web portal (e.g. a website) that users have already logged into. With the Single Sign-On option, users do not have to log into WebTerm separately.
Single Sign-On has to be set up by the administrator. The Single Sign-On login specifies the WebTerm dialog language and a user role. That role determines what the user's permissions in WebTerm are.
