8 Filtering data records

What you should know

You can filter data records so that WebTerm only displays those entries that match the filter criteria. WebTerm then hides all other data records. To do this you use what are known as "data record filters".

WebTerm incorporates a series of standard data record filters. They display data records according to whether or not a translation for the terminology sought exists (see the section "Standard data record filters").

In addition, you can define your own filter criteria to control which entries in a dictionary WebTerm displays or hides. These are what are known as the "basic filters" (see here).

As a further option, there are also what are known as "complex filters". Complex filters can be combinations of several basic filters and can incorporate additional settings as well; they can also be saved (see here).

Standard data record filters

WebTerm is provided with standard data record filters. They display data records according to whether or not a target-language entry (i.e. a translation) for the terminology sought exists.

Table 8-1: Standard data record filters

Standard data record filter

Effect

Always

WebTerm displays all data records.

If target language exists

WebTerm only displays the data records which have an entry in the current target language.

This filter prevents WebTerm displaying entries that are of no use to you because there is no entry in your target language.

If target language missing

WebTerm only displays the data records which do not contain an entry in the current target language.

You can use this filter to check your dictionary for missing entries in a language and fill in the entries if necessary.

You can also use these standard data record filters in conjunction with your own data record filters (see the sections "Basic filters" and "Complex filters"). WebTerm then only displays the data records which match both the standard data record filter and your data record filter.

If this function is not displayed

If WebTerm does not show this function, that means that you do not have the necessary user permissions to use it (see here). Please contact your administrator for further assistance.

Using standard data record filters

1 Open the Filter menu in the Settings area.

2 From the Display data records list, select one of the standard data record filters:

Table 8-1 explains what the individual filters mean.

The next time you perform a search, WebTerm will apply the filter and only display those data records which match the filter criterion.

Please note that WebTerm does not save any filter settings when you click the Save button. This prevents you inadvertently performing searches whose results are limited by filter settings the next time you log in.
