Copying or moving a data record or entry

What you should know

You can create new data records or entries by copying and then editing existing data records or entries.

You can copy either an entire data record or an individual entry. When doing so, you have the following choices:

Copy / Paste

You can use the Copy and Paste buttons to copy a data record via the clipboard from one dictionary to another or within the same dictionary (see here).

You can use the context-menu Copy and Paste options to copy an entry from one data record to another or copy it within the same data record and assign it a new language (see here).

Cut/Paste

You can use the Cut and Paste buttons to move a data record from one dictionary to another and delete the original data record (see here).

You can use the context-menu Cut and Paste options to move an entry from one data record to another, assign it a new language and delete the original data record (see here).

In addition, you can paste a data record from the clipboard into an existing data record (see the section "Merging a data record".

Copying or moving data records

You can copy a data record via the clipboard. To do so, you first copy the data record to the clipboard using the Copy button and then paste it into the same or another dictionary using the Paste button.

If you use the Cut button instead of the Copy button, WebTerm deletes the original data record when placing it on the clipboard. This function is normally used to move a data record from one dictionary to another. Moving a data record within the same dictionary does not make sense.

To copy or move a data record:

1 Select the data record that you want to copy or move. To do so, click the source-language term on the Search & Find panel.

WebTerm displays the data record on the Details panel.

2 Copy or cut the data record.

To copy the data record, click the Copy button. WebTerm copies the entire data record to the clipboard.

To cut the data record, click the Cut button.

WebTerm displays the following message in confirmation:
Data record will be deleted. Are you sure?

If you click OK in the message box, WebTerm moves the data record to the clipboard and deletes it from the dictionary.

3 To paste the data record from the clipboard into a dictionary, click the Paste button.

If WebTerm does not display the Paste button, that means you do not have editing permission, which means you cannot insert data records.

WebTerm then displays the following window:

4 Select the dictionary into which you want WebTerm to paste the new data record.

If you have access to more than one database, WebTerm also shows the name of the database in which the dictionary is stored.

5 Confirm your choice by clicking OK .

WebTerm displays the pasted data record on the Details panel. In addition, WebTerm switches to Edit mode so that you can edit the field contents.

Copying or moving an entry

You can copy an entry via the clipboard. To do so, you first copy the entry to the clipboard by selecting Copy from the context menu, and then paste it into the same or another data record by selecting Paste .

If you select Cut from the context menu instead of Copy , WebTerm deletes the original entry when placing it on the clipboard. This function is normally used to move an entry from one data record to another or within the same entry from one language to another. Moving an entry within the same data record and the same language does not make sense.

The context menu also offers the option Paste as which allows you to assign the entry a different language when pasting it. This function can be used, for instance, if you want to use a similar entry in another language or language variant.

To copy or move an entry:

1 Open the data record you require in Edit mode:

To do so, click the source-language term on the Search & Find panel. WebTerm shows the data record details.

Click the Edit button on the Details panel.

WebTerm switches to Edit mode so that you can edit the data record.

2 Copy or cut the entry. To do so, open the context menu by right-clicking the entry's 3-letter language code.

To copy the entry, select Copy from the context menu. WebTerm then copies the entry to the clipboard.

To cut the entry, select Cut from the context menu.

3 If you want to paste the entry into the same data record, you can skip the following steps and continue from step 6.

4 If you want to paste the entry into a different data record, exit Edit mode for the current data record.

To exit Edit mode and save your changes, click the Apply button.

To exit Edit mode without saving your changes, click the Cancel button.

Now you can select the destination data record into which you want to paste the entry.
